an american in paris
I’ve been holding out on you. I didn’t mean to and I’m sorry. I didn’t tell you that last month, I pre-scheduled a week of blog posts, shut off the computer and hopped a flight. To Paris. I know! Wow!
I went with my family. My Mom and Dad wanted to do this trip for Emily’s high school graduation. It was pushed back from last summer because of a few medical issues, but once everyone was feeling better, we embarked on an incredible week in the city of lights.
Like most tourists, we took in the city’s landmarks and soaked up its history. We “oohed and ahhed” over the multitude and grandeur of the cathedrals, sighed at the quaint streets, and were notably impressed by the incredibly well-coiffed Parisians. (Take heed – don’t dress like a tourist and wear sneakers in this city because you’ll stand out like a fly in soup.) But I was there for the food. Come on, we’re talking Paris. It’s all about the food!
So, in between visits to the Musee d’Orsay, the Panth?on, La Tour Eiffel,Cath?drale Notre-Dame de Paris, Montmartre and Sacr?-C?ur, we ate. A lot. To the point that I’m sporting a pretty healthy muffin top. But no matter. It wasn’t as if I was going to stick to a low carb diet in this food mecca.
In fact, so much of our trip was dedicated to exploring restaurants and cafes, patisseries, boulangeries and fromageries, in search of the quintessential croissant au beurre, chocolat chaud and soup a l’oignon – I’m almost embarrassed to tell you what we didn’t do. We’ll see the Louvre next time.
Anyway, I’ve been wanting to recount the details of our trip for you, but I’ve had so many stops and starts in sharing, I was getting nowhere. It finally dawned on me why. There’s just too much to cover in one post.
So to make it easier on me and you — too much reading about good french food will make you hungry, I’ve decided to break up the components of our vacation exploits into several posts. Restaurants and Cafes. Markets and Specialty Shops. Food Tour and Swag – what we brought home.
My parents went on to Venice and Rome after our weeklong sojourn (green-eyed monster coming out) so I’ll see if I can get some quality food-porn shots from their travels to share with you. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy these snapshots!
