Dark Chocolate Mint Sauce

There’s nothing like homemade chocolate sauce and this Dark Chocolate Mint Sauce is rich and thick like your favorite fudge sauce with a hit of peppermint. Skip the jarred dessert sauces and make this five minute family favorite!

Whether you’re a chocolate fiend or a mint aficionado, this Dark Chocolate Mint Sauce will win you over — and any else who happens to be near enough to see this luscious homemade chocolate sauce.

sugar, cocoa, butter, evaporated milk and peppermint extract.

I make this recipe mostly for my daughter who loves to pile mint on mint for her ice cream sundaes, but if I’m honest, Scott and I love this fudge sauce as much as she does.  It’s thick and creamy and one of the easiest if not best dessert sauces I’ve had.

Dark Chocolate Mint Sauce ingredients being whisked in a pot

As far as fudge sauce recipes go, this one is FAST… ready in about 5 minutes and made with ingredients you likely already have in your pantry.  At least I did when I decided we needed something to spoon on our vanilla ice cream for dessert. Dark Chocolate Mint Sauce was ready in a flash and we were ooh-ing and aah-ing mere moments later.

Dark Chocolate Mint Sauce cooling.

This fudge sauce recipe starts with sugar, cocoa powder and a little kosher salt.  Use the best cocoa powder you can, I prefer Scharfen Berger or Ghirardelli (and I’ve created an affiliate Amazon link below so you can get your own).

Whisk the dry ingredients together and then add a small can of evaporated milk (not sweetened condensed milk). Place the pan over a medium heat and whisk in the butter until its melted and well combined with the fudge sauce. The last flavor component is the peppermint extract.  If you don’t want mint in your fudge sauce, you can skip it for a truly rich and decadent homemade chocolate sauce, but if you’ve got a “thing” for mint — use it.

Dark Chocolate Mint Sauce in jars.

This recipe makes about 1 1/2 cups of Dark Chocolate Mint Sauce, which you can store in an airtight glass container in the refrigerator.  I use a couple of canning jars and squirrel one into the back of the fridge where no one knows it’s there but me… (don’t tell).

spooning Dark Chocolate Mint Sauce

This homemade chocolate sauce thickens as it cools and if you’re refrigerating it, you may want to heat it up for a few seconds in the microwave before spooning over your favorite ice cream.
