Strawberry Orange Banana Smoothie

Strawberry Orange Banana Smoothie with garnish.

For her birthday last year, we gave our college-age daughter,  Emily,  a NutriBullet blender.  She’s big into smoothies but on a college budget, she couldn’t afford the $5-6/day habit at Jamba Juice.  So, the NutriBullet made sense!  The same great smoothies at home for a fraction of the cost.  I can’t tell you how excited she was!  Her first week back to campus, she was texting me photos of her morning blend every day!   I made this Strawberry Orange Banana Smoothie with Emily in mind.  It’s a purists blend of fruits, yogurt and a little honey and ice, but it’s one I know she’ll love.

orange juice concentrate.

My secret ingredient for this frothy breakfast drink, is frozen concentrated orange juice.  It adds a deep citrus flavor without watering down the smoothie the way plain orange juice would.  When Em makes her morning blend, she adds all kinds of mix-ins including chia seeds and flax as well as kale and other veggies – I’m sure they would also be good in this one, but to keep that gorgeous blush color, I skipped the extras.

adding bananas to the blender.

For froth and body as well as a hefty dose of potassium an overripe banana is the way to go.    (Pro Tip:  when bananas get past their prime – stick them in the freezer until you’re ready to make a banana bread, smoothie or other mashed ‘nana recipe.)   This particular banana was still semi-frozen when I dropped it in the blender.  A handful of fresh Florida strawberries (at their sweet, juicy peak right now) gave this smoothie a lovely pink hue.

Blend the fruit, yogurt and honey together and then add a few ice cubes.  Pulse a few times until the drink is thick and creamy.  Pour into two glasses and serve.  Emily and I like an extra drizzle of honey on top — yum!

  1. Could you possibly make these ahead, say the night before and they still be good the next morning?

    1. That might be a challenge… I suppose you could mix everything but the ice together the night before and store it in the fridge. Then add ice and blend again in the morning. But if you make the smoothie and refrigerate it’s going to be watery the next day and will likely separate. Conversely, if you freeze it — it will — you know — freeze… not much of a smoothie. The only thing I can think that would keep it from freezing is to add alcohol. Which is fine, in my book. Let me know how it works for you. Now I’m curious!

I’ll give it a shot. 😉 No alcohol….21 weeks with my 4th lol

        1. Congratulations! Bummer on no alcohol though. I’ll have a glass of wine for you, ok?!

What a lucky daughter! Smoothies like this are a daily occurrence for me, especially in the warmer months. I’ve never tried using the frozen orange juice concentrate before — what a great idea!

    1. It makes sense when you think about, though– right?

  4. What a great gift for a college aged student. Wish I ate that healthy when I was in college! This smoothie looks like it would be a huge hit with my 12 year old daughter who loves making smoothies. I have never thought to use frozen juice concentrate but I’ll bet it really ramps up the flavors! Looks delicious!

    1. The orange juice concentrate gives it a citrus flavor without watering down the smoothie!

Love the idea of using frozen concentrated OJ. I really like orange in my smoothie but too lazy to juice as well as blend so I don’t often use it. I have a freezer full of black bananas too.
