Believe it or not, I’ve been dreaming about this redesign for 2 years! It’s been kind of like planning a kitchen makeover – picking out samples, collecting photos and images of what appeals to you, making notes on what you want and what you don’t… imagining, wishing — and wondering if you’ll ever actually get around to doing it!
Well, I did! Finally! And it was a process very similar to a kitchen remodel — you’re fine with the inconvenience for the first few days, but after two weeks of dust, disorder and doing dishes in your bathroom sink — you just want it DONE!
So here it is! Finally! Better late than never: Garlic & Zest 2.0! New logo. New color scheme. We even changed the “+” sign to a funky/chunky ampersand! But that’s not the half of it! Let’s take a walk through the site and I’ll show you all the cool changes!
The first thing you’ll notice is our header — it’s scrollable and full of (clickable) photos that will take you straight to the latest recipes on the blog — so if you haven’t visited in a while, you can catch-up quickly.
The most recent posts will still be highlighted as you scroll through the home page, but a little further down, we’ll also showcase the most popular recipes as well as the newest dishes in specific categories. I’ll also highlight appropriate Seasonal or Holiday favorites in that space.
We’ve completely reworked the Recipes category to make it easier to find what you’re hungry for! Each category includes photos of all the recipes in that category with links to each dish! I think the pictures are important because we eat with our eyes first – so you’ll know — without getting in too deep whether you’re “into” a recipe or not.
I’ve enhanced the About page with more photos, so you can get to know the family I’m constantly referring to in my posts.
The right rail has links to my Facebook page, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram – if you haven’t already, join me on whichever medium you’re most comfortable.
One of the things I hated with the old site was my comments area. It felt clunky and pedestrian to me. This new version is sleeker, easier to read and more refined. At least I think so — but I really want to hear what you think! Give me the good and the not-so-good, I can take it! If you like a recipe or if one didn’t work out for you, tell me about it. With your help, I can make it better — or we can deposit it in the round filing cabinet and move on to another one…
And for any businesses interested in partnering with me for food photography, brand sponsorships or advertising, there are appropriate links to get in touch!
One housekeeping note: I’d really appreciate it if you’d let me know if something isn’t working right on the site. If you come across a dead link or get a 404 error or notice anything else that just seems wonky, shoot me an e-mail and let me know. I’ll be working to fix any errors, but with nearly 400 recipes, there’s bound to be something that gets past my purview! Thanks!
I have several people I need to thank! First, my always cheery (though I think she’s missing clumps of hair because of me) web designer, Stephanie, for guiding me through this process — and thank you for not pummeling me with 4-letter words when I wanted to change the logo the day before launch. Yes. I did that.
Thank you to my Mom and Dad for being so understanding as I spent the entire weekend glued to my computer instead of relaxing under the chickee with you.
And finally, thank you Scott – you have endured my meltdowns bravely, only reached for a second cocktail a few times and though I’m sure you’ve contemplated the cost of divorce, happily — I was never served with papers!
