1 Hot Buttered Rum Mix – 4 Hot Rum Drinks

In the colder months, there’s nothing like a hot beverage to warm you up from the outdoor chill and if I had my druthers, hot rum drinks would be at the top of my list. Hot buttered rum batter is the starting point for these lip-smacking winter rum drinks (and one mocktail). Which one is your favorite?

Rarely is it chilly enough in South Florida to warrant a hot drink (morning coffee is the exception), however, on those occasions when the mercury dips, we Floridians use it as an excuse to indulge in those things the rest of you probably enjoy all year. So, what’s so special about hot buttered rum? Aside from rum and butter? It’s the batter.

Spice Blend For Hot Buttered Rum Batter
The batter is really what makes these winter rum drinks special. To me, it tastes like the start of your favorite spice cookie recipe with
- Nutmeg
- Allspice
- Cinnamon
- Cloves
- Ginger
in a blend of nose-tickling aromas. In fact, this is a blend that would be right at home in a sugar cookie recipe or a apple cinnamon cake. So let’s get to the mix…
Hot Buttered Rum Mix
In a bowl combine:
- softened butter
- brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon of the spice blend
- kosher salt
Use a hand mixer (or a fork and a little muscle) to cream the ingredients together into a sweet, beater-licking, blend.

Just a small scoop of this sweet and spicy amalgam is the foundation for these hot rum drinks. If some happens to accidentally fall onto the end of your finger (ahem)… it’s ok to taste.

Winter Rum Drinks – Traditional Hot Buttered Rum
Let’s start with the classic. Hot, soothing, spiced — with a grown-up kick of dark rum. I like Mount Gay for this – a good mixing rum and not too expensive.
In a mug, combine:
- 2 tablespoons hot buttered rum batter
- 2 ounces dark rum
- 8 ounces hot water

Coffee Hot Buttered Rum Mix
As a coffee-nut, this just seemed like an obvious blend. Hot coffee, kahlua, rum and the batter. Float a few coffee beans on top for flair, or if you take your coffee “light”, top yours with a squirt of whipped cream.
In a mug, combine:
- 2 tablespoons batter
- 1 ounce Kahlua
- 1 ounce dark rum
- 8 ounces hot coffee

Honestly, I think this one was my favorite, but I had to press on because that’s the job of a food blogger. (I know, it’s tough.) If you’re a coffee lover, this Coffee Spiced Hot Buttered Rum is for you!

For Hot Buttered Rum with Apple Cider
Hot buttered rum mix with apple cider is flavor on flavor and the rum softens the sweetness of this variation.
In a mug combine:
- 2 tablespoons batter
- 1/8 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 ounces dark rum
- 8 ounces hot apple cider
- cinnamon stick for garnish (optional)

For Hot Buttered Rum Mocktail
This is a great mocktail version for kids and adults alike. It’s sweet and spiced and very festive!
In a mug combine:
- 2 tablespoons hot buttered rum batter
- 1/8 teaspoon vanilla
- 10 ounces hot apple cider
- cinnamon stick for garnish
